The Challenge: Through a series of acquisitions and consolidation, the client has become one of the world’s largest vendors of electrical submersible pumps (ESP) with market dominance in Russia and China. The client has embarked on a major marketing drive to be competitive with western vendors in order to penetrate higher margin international markets in the West, Latin America and the Middle East. A significant component of this drive is to leverage the company’s differentiating technology into a set of analysis tools that will be used initially for the design of their customer’s installations, and subsequently as part of an overall service for continuous 24x7 monitoring with the objective of extending run life, a critical performance metric for ESPs
Our Role: EICE’s petroleum engineering advisors and software architects have teamed with the client’s experienced ESP design engineers to assess the state of ESP technology (both within the organization as well as externally), identifying strengths and limitations in key areas, and have created a design for the implementation of the next generation software tools for ESP analysis, design and monitoring.

Our Approach: The joint analysis was based on a review of existing in-house spreadsheets, commercial solutions as well as proprietary competitor offerings, supplemented with a series of extensive interviews with field engineers and customers. The resulting design will form the basis for the next phase of the project which will be the development of a comprehensive engineering analysis module for ESP design. The focus of the architectural design of the software is longer term extensibility of the complex engineering design algorithms into the subsequent real-time surveillance and diagnostics applications.

Technologies:
Platform: – web application on Cloud (Microsoft Azure)

Engineering: – EICE’s proprietary XWORK engine for multiphase flow analysis in the wellbore

User Interface : –HTML5, JQuery, WCF restful services

Value to Client: Moving from the use of multiple geographically-dispersed field-driven approaches to a central engineering-focused solution based on the latest standards, technology and methodologies is expected to provide benefit on multiple fronts, not the least of which is a significant step in promoting the market perception of our client as technology leader in the artificial lift arena.

The Challenge: Our client has created an integrated asset modeling (IAM) and workflow orchestration environment for oilfield production operations. The challenge was to develop the capability to dynamically integrate reservoir simulation models with surface models.

Our Role: EICE consultants designed and implemented an overall solution that integrates reservoir modeling capabilities (both rigorous simulation models as well as proxy tools) within the overall IAM environment.

Our Approach: The approach was to create a generalized solution applicable for all common workflows involving the interaction between subsurface and surface disciplines. The overall approach encompassed three distinct areas of application within a common workflow: a) automate the generation of well performance tables for use by any reservoir simulation model; b) automate the use of simulator-generated forecasts by the surface network models; and c) enable the dynamic coupling of reservoir simulator models with surface network models so that the two types of modeling solutions can execute in lockstep while simulating the life of the asset. The uniqueness of this solution is in the interdependency between the three distinct workflows that have traditionally been treated as separate.

Software Used: Commercial software modules used in the integration include Eclipse and Nexus for reservoir simulation, Prosper and WellFlo for well modeling, GAP for surface network analysis, and HYSYS for process simulation. EICE’s internal EICEcubes for well modeling, PVT analysis and network analysis were also used during prototype development.

Value to Client: The comprehensive approach to subsurface-surface integration is a key aspect of the client’s offering in the production optimization space. EICE is currently engaged with the client’s team in implementing this approach for an integrated operations solution for a major shale asset in North America

The Challenge: The client markets the leading simulator for the analysis of oil and gas production systems. A critical component of the application engine is the algorithm for the solving multiphase flow networks. The client has recently embarked on an initiative to develop the next generation multiphase network solver based on a generalized Newton approach that is expected significantly improve solution speed, robustness and enhance functionality, all critical requirements for solving optimization problems involving large (100s of wells) gathering systems.

Our Role: EICE is providing advisory consulting services in the design the new solution algorithm. EICE’s consultants have several years of industry-leading expertise in solving complex multiphase flow and numerical analysis problems.

Our Approach: EICE consultants have advised the client on their extensive practical experience in both network solver implementation and complex multiphase flow analysis through a set of workshops and white papers with the client’s development team. EICE will continue to participate in the longer term development on an advisory basis.

Value to Client: A robust and efficient network solver will be at the center of the client’s future production optimization strategy. The significant experience of the EICE consultants in this area is being leveraged to accelerate time to market and minimize development risk.

The Challenge: Our client is a Canadian SCADA and instrumentation vendor that provides subscription-based field monitoring services to independent oil and gas operating companies in Alberta and British Columbia. The company is looking to extend its offering to the next step in the value chain – leverage the data available through its monitoring services to provide customers with reliable diagnostic solutions that are designed to help improve operations and meet regulatory compliance requirements.

Our Role: EICE partnered with the client for the development of the initial phase of a web-based oil and gas operations management platform that is designed to combine real-time field data with static government and client data repositories while leveraging engineering analysis tool, with the overall solution driven by an interactive web-based GIS interface.

Our Approach: With the twin goals of maintaining market focus while simultaneously managing R&D costs, EICE have taken a project-driven approach, where funded projects are used to drive the overall platform development strategy. The first phase of the project involved the development of a fugitive emissions management system for oil and gas operators in Alberta that is mandated by state regulatory laws.

Technologies:

Platform: – web application

Database: – Microsoft SQL Server 2008 R2

User Interface : – ASP.Net, crystal reports.

Value to Client: The value of the fugitive emissions service is not only that it ensures that oil and gas producers meet their compliance requirements, but they also save money as a result of decreased excess wasted gas as leaks are identified and repaired within a shorter timeframe. The client sees the this new initiative as a critical platform for offering more value-added services to its existing customer base as well as in expanding its offering to US and international markets. The association with EICE enables the SCADA vendor to leverage advanced engineering and technology applications to achieve these objectives.
